Geopolitics for EM Boards: How to Read the Tea Leaves in a Stirred Cup
September 18, 2024
With Global Markets, Corporate Governance, and Geopolitical expertise, this online roundtable showcased expert views on possible scenarios for the rest of 2024. As the global picture appears to turn increasingly opaque, what are the risk and opportunities that Boards need to be aware of?
After eight momentous months of 2024, which saw half of the global population go to the polls to choose their leaders, we were back to read the tea leaves in this stirred cup with the perspectives of markets, geopolitical, governance, and EM board professionals.
Our first review of the geopolitical picture last January resulted in a benign outlook, which effectively came to pass. The remainder of 2024 though seems to pose serious challenges.
The main goal of this webinar was to expose central geopolitical and market scenarios that Board Directors can evaluate, in the context of their home countries and related corporate sectors.
We addressed the opposing gravitational forces that could sway certain outcomes with material consequences for EM countries and their entities. At the centre of this lies the results of the upcoming US presidential election, the current weakness in China’s economy, the growing extreme right populist trend in the west, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and Latin America’s place post the next US election.
Our panellists addressed these themes with global and regional perspectives and took questions from the audience with an interactive approach.
These themes were discussed, among many others:
The path for global monetary policy and the impact on global markets
The bifurcation of outcomes that hang from the US election result
The impacts from the US election result on East-West and North-South relations
The persistent weakness of the Chinese economy, and the temptation of nationalist crusades
The emergence of far right politics and what it means for democracy and markets
The future of global supply chains
